Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs) to Become an Army Officer

Preparing for the SSB (Services Selection Board) interview is a crucial step toward achieving one’s dream of becoming an officer in the Indian Army. This rigorous and highly competitive selection process evaluates not just the candidates’ knowledge but also their personality, leadership skills, and mental agility. To excel in the SSB interview, candidates must focus on improving their physical fitness, general knowledge, and communication skills.

Additionally, a deep understanding of the SSB interview format and its various stages, including the screening test, psychological tests, group tasks, and the personal interview, is essential. In this article, we are going to address the Indigenous Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) required to become an army officer. These are appended below and hope that these will enhance your personality and career growth. All these OLQs are further categorized into 4 different factors/Groups to assess the candidates during the five-day SSB interview:-

Factor-I:       Intellectual

In this factor, your brainpower and capability to handle it during the crisis hours is tested. Hence, there are 4 OLQs that come under this factor to assess the candidate during five days SSB:-

(i)     Effective Intelligence (EI)
(ii)    Reasoning Ability (RA)
(iii)   Organizing Ability (OA)
(iv)   Power of Expression (PoE)

Factor-II:       Social Adjustment

In this factor, your social adjustment is tested, that how good can you mingle/mix up with people around you or in your group. Hence, there are 3 OLQs that come under this factor to assess the candidate: –

(i)     Social Adaptability (SA)
(ii)    Co-operation (Co)
(iii)   Sense of Responsibility (SoR)

Factor-III:       Social Effectiveness

In this factor, the candidate is being assessed to know how effective is he/she in the group of people. This is one of the important factors to evaluate the candidate, as officers in the armed forces need to keep the morale of their subordinates high. There are 5 OLQs which brief about this factor:-

(i)     Initiative (In)
(ii)    Self Confidence (SC)
(iii)   Quickness of Decision (QoD)
(iv)   Ability to Influence (AI)
(v)    Liveliness (Li)

Factor-IV :       Dynamism

This factor is again one of the important ones to evaluate the energy and spirit level of the candidate. As we all know that the officer must be energetic and physically fit to handle any type of task. Hence, there are 3 OLQs that come under this factor to assess the candidate: –

(i)     Determination (D)
(ii)    Courage (C)
(iii)   Stamina (S)

Other than the above-mentioned factors/OLQs. The candidates need to work on the following qualities also, which will help them during the SSB interview as well as in their future career growth:-

Additional Qualities Which Play Important Role

1. Discipline

Discipline is a key factor in the army, without it, you cannot survive. A disciplined person is someone who exhibits self-control and follows rules or principles strictly. Also, adherence to a specific code of conduct helps the individual to stay organized, responsible, and committed.

2. Well Motivated

Good officers/leaders are fully committed and motivated towards achieving their goals, dreams and objectives. They are characterized by a proactive attitude, a sense of purpose and the willingness to take initiative and persevere in the face of challenges. Motivated individuals tend to set high standards for themselves and are committed to continuous improvement and personal growth.

3. Adaptability & Flexibility

To become an effective officer, you must be flexible to adjust with the arising situation to obtain positive results. While you are working to execute the given task, it is not possible that it will always go exactly as planned in the sand room. Hence, in this situation, great officers can go with the flow. They are focused on their objective, but flexible in their approach. In another way, adaptability is a soft skill that means you easily adjust with surroundings or change according to circumstances around you. An adaptable and skilled person keeps moving along with the changes in the workplace focusing on his priorities, projects, clients, and technology. They are skilled at dealing with changes at work, whether process updates or their work environment.

4. Punctual

A punctual person is someone who constantly completes tasks at the appointed time without causing delay or being late. Such individuals value and respect the importance of being on time and understand that it demonstrates reliability, responsibility, and respect for others’ time. Punctual people are organized, manage their time effectively and prioritize meeting deadlines or arriving promptly for appointments, meetings, or events. They understand the impact of punctuality on productivity, efficiency, and building trust with others.

5. Result Orientated and Positive Thinking

Being an officer, you are involved with a number of operations and unit tasks for which a primary focus is the planning, big picture in mind, strategic points, and future operations, while the NCOs/JCOs run the day-to-day operations. Good officers can separate the minutia from the big picture. Great and intelligent officers are always thinking ahead keeping in future prospects, and considering the big picture, as they make their decisions.

6. Need Effective Communication

One of your most important jobs as a leader is to communicate with your team and top brass leadership. This includes verbal and written communication. Great leaders/officers develop their public speaking skills, so they can speak confidently in front of other people to attract them. They also have great writing skills to convince their ideas or goals to others.

7. Focused on your Goals

Great leaders are focused on their goals. They keep their goal all the time in their mind and stay focused on the point and do not get distracted. They also make sure the focus is NOT about them. They focus on the mission, the unit, and others.

8. Effective Leaders Must be Good Listener

Effective officers are great listeners and they do more listening than talking. They are very well know that they cannot learn anything by talking but they can learn a lot by listening from other’s experiences. This is one of the top Army Officer Leadership Qualities.

9. Sincerity

A person who is genuine, honest, and truthful in their words, actions and intentions. They do not pretend or deceive others and their behaviors aligns with their true feelings and beliefs, sincere individuals are open and straightforward forward expressing their thoughts and emotions without manipulations or hidden agendas. They are trustworthy and dependable.

10. Determined

A determined person is someone who possesses a strong resolve, unwavering willpower, and perseverance in pursuing their goals and objectives. Such an individual demonstrates a steadfast commitment to overcoming challenges, obstacles, and setbacks without easily giving up or losing motivation. A great officer needs strong determination and aspirations, regardless of the difficulties that may arise along the way.

11. Be Always Open Mind

Great leaders/officers are confident, but they do not act like, they know every and each things”. They seek advice from their boss and Co-workers whenever possible. They are always looking for ways to improve and do things a better way. They thoroughly know that anyone can give them a good workable idea.

12. Must Be Team Man

In the army, teamwork helps to accomplish your task/goal easily. Hence, a good officer is always a team player first. It means that he is a good follower, in addition to being a good leader.

13. Always Trustworthy

Your Soldiers, subordinates, peers, and supervisor must be able to trust in you only, while you will prove it in front of them. This means you are a person of your word and you are reliable in any situation.
